Commissioning of the ground-based power plant in Giurone, Corsica

Corsica Sole strengthens its position as Corsica’s leading independent solar energy producer
In June 2018, Corsica Sole commissioned a new solar photovoltaic power plant at the Giurone site in Prunelli di Casacconi, near Bastia. It will meet the annual consumption needs of 1,500 households. It has a capacity of 4.8 MWp and a storage capacity of 7.5 MWh.
The “Production + Storage” mix represents the future of solar energy in Corsica, and more broadly, in island areas. It allows part of the electricity produced during the hottest hours of the day to be stored and fed back into the grid in the evening, when consumption is highest and production is most expensive. Ecologically sound, solar energy thus also becomes eminently virtuous economically.
Having opened the pioneering Alata power plant in Corsica in 2015, Corsica Sole has always been at the forefront of storage solutions.
With this new solar farm, its fourth (over 4 MWp) in Corsica, Corsica Sole is strengthening its position as the leading independent solar energy producer on the island. It has also been operating 18 solar-powered agricultural sheds for several years.
1,500 households and… 150 sheep
Its projects combine environmental excellence with technological innovation. In Giurone, for example, the site is maintained—in part—by a flock of 150 sheep, which help to clear the 8 hectares of the park. Corsica Sole has also chosen to install its panels on wasteland. Solar energy is giving unused land a new lease of life.
Finally, the site’s thousands of photovoltaic panels are mounted on “trackers.” By allowing them to rotate throughout the day and follow the sun, the trackers boost the system’s energy production by around 10% compared to fixed installations.
