CORSICA SOLE – 1st winner of the CRE tender for centralized storage projects in non-interconnected areas
News
Corsica Sole has just been named the winner of two arbitrage storage projects, each with a capacity of 5 MW and 10 MWh, in Corsica and Réunion.
This success rewards and recognizes the exceptional expertise that Corsica Sole has developed in these areas. We have made it our mission to support island regions on their path to energy independence and transition. We are convinced that this requires the development of storage solutions. That is why we continue to invest in developing innovative solutions, particularly in the area of arbitrage.
Arbitrage makes it possible to draw electricity from the grid when production costs are lowest and feed it back in during peak hours when consumption—and prices—are at their highest. This makes it easier to regulate energy production from power plants on the grid, ensuring smoother and more stable production. Lithium batteries have the ability to start up very quickly and immediately replace lost power. By relying on intermittent energy sources, the grid operator—EDF—can pool and optimize its management without having to resort to fossil fuels.
The CRE launched this call for tenders at the end of 2017 and selected the winners in the fall of 2018. Seven storage units will be made available to EDF. They will be installed in Réunion, in Saint Benoit on the east coast in the Cratére district, and in Corsica, in the village of Prato. They are scheduled to come into service in 2020.
