Corsica Sole is inaugurating one of the most powerful energy storage facilities in continental Europe with Hertz 2.

A few months after Hertz 1 began operations, Corsica Sole is continuing its European expansion with the inauguration of Hertz 2, a new battery energy storage facility located in Aruküla, Estonia.

Together, these two facilities constitute one of the most powerful energy storage complexes in continental Europe and help strengthen the stability of the European power grid.

A New Milestone for Energy Storage in Europe

Developed by the Baltic Storage Platform, a joint venture between Corsica Sole, Evecon, and Mirova, Hertz 2 has a capacity of 100 MW and a storage capacity of 200 MWh.

Together with Hertz 1, which was commissioned last February, the facility brings the complex’s total capacity to 200 MW and 400 MWh, making Baltic Storage Platform one of the largest battery energy storage systems in continental Europe.

Connected to the electricity transmission grid operated by Elering, Hertz 2 helps maintain the balance of the power grid. Thanks to its ability to respond to frequency variations within milliseconds, it provides system services, facilitates the integration of renewable energy, and helps limit fluctuations in the electricity market.

Energy Storage: A Cornerstone of Modern Electric Power Systems

The expansion of renewable energy is accompanied by a growing need for flexibility solutions. When solar or wind generation exceeds consumption, batteries allow the available electricity to be stored and then released when demand increases.

This ability to constantly balance supply and demand makes energy storage an essential component of modern power grids today.

In the Baltic countries, now synchronized with the continental European power grid, infrastructure such as Hertz 2 plays a strategic role in strengthening the resilience of the power system and securing the electricity supply.

Fifteen Years of French Expertise Serving Europe

A pioneer in energy storage for over fifteen years, Corsica Sole has developed its expertise in island power grids, where batteries play an indispensable role in ensuring a balance between electricity generation and consumption.

This experience, gained in particularly demanding environments, now enables the company to develop some of the most ambitious projects in Europe.

With Hertz 1 and then Hertz 2, Corsica Sole has demonstrated its ability to operate across the entire value chain of a storage project: development, financing, engineering, grid integration, operation, and monetization on the electricity markets.

Expertise that paves the way for tomorrow’s energy infrastructure

With Hertz 1 and Hertz 2, Baltic Storage Platform also represents the largest private investment made in the Estonian energy sector to date. This achievement illustrates the growing importance of energy storage as an essential infrastructure for the European energy transition.

The experience gained through these projects also fuels Corsica Sole’s ambitions in France. A few days before Hertz 2 went online, the company co-founded Stockage Énergie France, the first professional association dedicated to stationary battery storage, with the goal of contributing to the development of a strong French industry.

Through Hertz 2, Corsica Sole reaffirms its commitment to applying its expertise to create more flexible and resilient power systems capable of sustainably supporting the development of renewable energy.
