Abondance energy storage power plant (Réunion Island)
Energy storageIn operationRéunion Island
Located in Saint-Benoît, on the east coast of La Réunion, the Abondance energy storage facility lies at the heart of the territory’s energy transition strategy.
In an island-based, non-interconnected power system, where grid stability is a critical challenge, this installation plays a key role in ensuring the reliability of energy supply and supporting the development of renewable energies.
With a storage capacity of 10 MWh, the facility is based on five lithium-ion battery units and three medium-voltage transformers, spread over an area of 972 m².
A strategic installation for La Réunion’s energy security
Thanks to this technology, Abondance stores surplus electricity generated during the day and releases it during peak demand periods, particularly in the evening.
It therefore helps to secure the grid, absorb production fluctuations and reduce reliance on thermal power plants, actively contributing to the decarbonisation of La Réunion’s energy mix.
Cutting-edge technology serving the power grid
The latest-generation lithium-ion batteries used at the Abondance site are specifically designed to meet the requirements of an island grid.
They perform two essential functions:
Energy arbitrage, optimising electricity use throughout the day;
Grid regulation, continuously maintaining frequency and voltage stability.
These functions make the facility a true energy flexibility asset, capable of supporting the grid during sudden changes in production or consumption.
By stabilising the system, the plant enables greater integration of renewable energies while ensuring a continuous power supply for the island’s residents.
A smart and connected project
The Abondance facility is equipped with a digital control system that enables remote, real-time monitoring and management of the batteries.
Thanks to intelligent algorithms, it is possible to anticipate consumption peaks and adjust the storage strategy according to grid needs.
This predictive management makes the project a model of a smart grid, foreshadowing the energy infrastructures of tomorrow: more connected, more responsive and fully decarbonised.
A positive impact for the territory
Beyond its technical dimension, Abondance reflects the ambition to develop a resilient and sustainable energy model for La Réunion.
The project mobilised local skills and expertise throughout its development, generating direct and indirect employment across the territory.
By contributing to the stabilisation of the electricity grid and the reduction of CO₂ emissions, the Abondance energy storage facility plays a full role in building a more autonomous and environmentally responsible energy future for the island.
In an island context where energy security is crucial, the Abondance project makes a decisive contribution by strengthening La Réunion’s storage capacity and improving the resilience of its electricity grid. With Abondance, Corsica Sole does more than support system balance: it literally provides an ‘abundance’ of reliable and sustainable energy for the island
