Folelli Solar power plant and green hydrogen production

Folell’Hy, a hydrogen facility: the first green hydrogen production unit in Corsica
Folell’Hy is the first hydrogen facility in Corsica, developed by Corsica Sole on the site of the Folelli solar power plant. This experimental pilot site forms part of an innovative strategy to valorise surplus solar energy that cannot be injected into the grid, by converting it into green hydrogen through an electrolyser powered by excess production.
This large-scale project illustrates Corsica Sole’s ability to turn energy challenges into sustainable opportunities, while strengthening its role as a key player in the energy transition within island territories.
Converting solar energy into green hydrogen
Integrated into the Alchymiste project, winner of the i-Nov competition organised by Bpifrance (Wave 11), Folell’Hy leverages the capacity of the Folelli solar power plant to produce decarbonised, local and renewable hydrogen. The hydrogen produced is then stored under pressure for various energy uses across the island.
This sustainable storage model makes it possible to transform surplus solar energy into an energy carrier available at any time. It actively contributes to the fight against climate change and to the reduction of CO₂ emissions.
Concrete and innovative applications
Alchymiste, an innovative project for an island energy transition
Corsica Sole is the initiator of the Alchymiste project, a major innovation supported by the France 2030 programme and recognised as a winner of the 11th wave of the i-Nov competition led by Bpifrance.
This ambitious project aims to demonstrate that an island territory can achieve carbon neutrality and energy autonomy. By using hydrogen as a large-scale storage solution, the project explores the integration of intermittent renewable energies (photovoltaic and wind power) while preserving the balance and stability of the electricity grid.
Direct synergy with the Folelli solar power plant
Covering an area of 32 hectares, the Folelli solar power plant generates 18 GWh of electricity per year. Thanks to Folell’Hy, this energy can now be valorised even when it cannot be injected into the grid.
This complementarity between solar power and hydrogen provides a concrete solution to strengthen Corsica’s energy autonomy.
