Giuncaggio solar power plant with storage – Corsica

Solar energyEnergy storageIn operationCorsica

Built on a 6.5-hectare site in Giuncaggio, Haute-Corse, the solar power plant is now a major renewable electricity production facility on the island.

With an installed capacity of 5 MWp and 11,490 photovoltaic panels, it produces around 7 GWh of electricity each year, covering the equivalent of the annual electricity consumption of 4,000 people, heating included (ADEME source, 2023).

A balance between technological innovation and environmental responsibility

Commissioned in 2019, this installation marked a significant milestone in the development of renewable energy in Corsica: at the time, it was the largest photovoltaic power plant with energy storage ever built on the island.

Equipped with a 7.5 MWh storage capacity, the plant can release electricity generated during the day at peak demand times, contributing to the stability of the island grid and strengthening Corsica’s energy autonomy.

Thanks to its solar trackers, which automatically adjust the orientation of the panels according to the sun’s position, production is optimised by nearly 10%, enhancing the plant’s performance and efficiency through cutting-edge technology.

A strong commitment to local biodiversity

Beyond its energy performance, the Giuncaggio power plant reflects Corsica Sole’s commitment to integrating each project into its natural environment.

From the design phase onwards, in-depth ecological studies were carried out to identify the fauna and flora present on the site.

These assessments led to the implementation of concrete preservation measures, including differentiated green space management, the maintenance of natural habitats and support for the regrowth of local vegetation.

Such actions promote the harmonious coexistence of energy production and biodiversity, while limiting land artificialisation.

The site therefore forms part of a sustainable and environmentally responsible approach, demonstrating that a solar power plant can be a driver of ecological transition while preserving local ecosystems.

A site with a strong educational role, rooted in its territory

The Giuncaggio power plant is not limited to electricity generation; it also plays an educational and territorial role.

It regularly welcomes school and university visits, enabling pupils, students and young professionals to gain hands-on insight into how a hybrid solar power plant operates.

These exchanges offer genuine immersion into the professions and challenges of the energy transition, while strengthening the link between innovation, education and local development.

As highlighted by Jean-Christophe Angelini, former President of ADEC:

« The challenge today lies not only in producing renewable energy, but also in storing it. This project allows us to better manage significant consumption peaks thanks to its storage capacity. »

Giuncaggio, an innovation by Corsica Sole

An independent solar energy producer and European leader in energy storage, Corsica Sole develops and operates more than 150 MWp of installed capacity and 360 MWh of storage capacity in Corsica, mainland France, overseas territories and across Europe.

The Giuncaggio project fully illustrates the company’s philosophy: combining technological innovation, energy performance and environmental responsibility to build a sustainable energy future.
