In April 2024, Corsica Sole inaugurated its Vanilla Agrivoltaic Canopies in La Réunion, marking a symbolic step forward for agriculture by combining technological innovation with a sustainable approach to vanilla cultivation.
Covering an area of 690 m², this installation was designed to address the challenges posed by climate change while enhancing a high value-added crop: vanilla.
Designed to provide optimal protection against climatic hazards, the canopy helps shield vanilla plants from temperature extremes and adverse weather conditions, while creating a favourable microclimate for their growth.
This innovative system blends modernity and tradition by integrating renewable solar energy production, which not only contributes to reducing CO₂ emissions but also provides a low-carbon and sustainable energy source for the farm.
The project demonstrates that innovation can effectively support local agricultural practices and help prepare for future environmental challenges.
Multiple benefits for farmers
Reduced use of pesticides
Climate control
Improved growing conditions
Shading levels adapted specifically to vanilla cultivation
Water savings (rainwater harvesting for irrigation)
Collaboration with a local partner
These photovoltaic canopies dedicated to vanilla cultivation, developed in partnership with ProVanille, demonstrate Corsica Sole’s ability to harmoniously integrate agriculture and solar energy production.
By protecting crops from climatic hazards, this combined approach creates a resilient and environmentally respectful agricultural system, actively contributing to a greener and more sustainable economy.
A cyclone-resistant solution
The island of La Réunion was struck by Cyclones Belal (2024) and Garance (2025), causing extensive damage. However, vanilla plants grown under Corsica Sole’s photovoltaic canopies showed remarkable resistance to these storms.
By contrast, vanilla plants not protected by the canopies were completely destroyed.
This resilience highlights the effectiveness of Corsica Sole’s cyclone-resistant agrivoltaic canopies in protecting crops from extreme weather conditions.
An alliance for the energy and agricultural transition
Developed in partnership with ProVanille, a vanilla cooperative in La Réunion bringing together 150 producers across 150 hectares of forested land, this project symbolises the alliance between tradition and innovation.
By protecting vanilla crops from climatic hazards while integrating solar energy production, the project actively contributes to the island’s energy autonomy and to the development of a green and sustainable economy.
In addition, the agrivoltaic canopy supplies electricity to around 100 local households, while preserving an exceptional agricultural heritage.
Did you know?
Vanilla is often referred to as “black gold” due to its rarity, high market value and rich aroma. This nickname reflects the precious nature of this spice, which requires meticulous cultivation and preparation methods, making it one of the most sought-after spices in the world.
Unlike mainland Europe, La Réunion is not an interconnected territory where energy flows across borders. We aim to provide solutions that help move towards ever greater energy autonomy. We believe that the ecological transition must be achieved through a collaborative approach with local territories, favouring regional stakeholders and dialogue with local experts. The first agrivoltaic canopy in Bras-Panon will serve as a model. This innovative partnership already encourages us to consider photovoltaic installations for other crops and in other territories.”
In the long term, the idea is to develop this same photovoltaic canopy system for all types of agricultural production. Managing bad weather, cyclones and insect pressure on crops — all of these challenges can be addressed with solar solutions.
