The first fire and rescue service in France to equip all its stations to generate solar energy

News

Fire stations in southern Corsica will now be contributing to the energy transition.

Committed to protecting the environment, the Southern Corsica Fire and Rescue Service has chosen Corsica Sole, a major player in the photovoltaic sector, to equip its 20 fire stations, soon to be 22, with photovoltaic roofs and shade structures.

It will thus be the first SDIS in France to equip all of its sites with solar shade structures and roofs to produce green energy. These installations will represent a total power of 3 MWp, the equivalent of the power of a large solar power plant, and will be able to meet the annual electricity consumption of 3,600 inhabitants.

At the heart of the fire department’s missions

This initiative shows that protecting the environment is now at the heart of the fire department’s missions. That is why it was one of the major concerns raised during the inauguration of Pierre POLI, President of the institution.

To mark this significant environmental action, the Porto-Vecchio joint center, the Evisa rural mountain fire station, and the Ajaccio Main Rescue Center will be the first three facilities to benefit from this solar technology by the end of the year. These are important fire stations that reflect the essence of the South Corsica department.

These photovoltaic shade structures, installed around the buildings, will also provide shelter for equipment in both summer and winter, thus meeting a demand expressed by many rescue centers in the department.

22 fire stations equipped by Corsica Sole

Corsica Sole will design, finance, and build photovoltaic roof shades for all the centers, as well as install solar panels on existing roofs and maintain these installations. In France and in most overseas departments and regions, Corsica Sole has built numerous solar power plants and works with local authorities to “green” their buildings.

These infrastructures will produce electricity for the entire department. This environmental initiative once again positions the South Corsica Fire and Rescue Service as a fervent defender of ecology on the island and will contribute to the island’s energy independence.

About the South Corsica Fire and Rescue Service

With 1,200 volunteer firefighters, 200 professional firefighters, and 120,000 calls per year, SIS 2A has an operational activity and mobilization corresponding to a category B+ SDIS (e.g., Vaucluse) during the summer period. In winter, it corresponds to a category C SIS (e.g., Alpes de Haute-Provence).
