A new life for a former industrial brownfield
Built on a former industrial brownfield that once hosted a coal-fired power station, the Beuvry energy storage facility continues the site’s energy transition.
Following the redevelopment of the site through the construction of the Beuvry solar power plant, the land now hosts a new electricity storage facility. Although both installations are located on the same site, they are two separate and independent projects. The energy storage facility is not connected to the solar power plant and does not directly store the electricity it generates. Instead, it has its own independent connection to the electricity transmission network.
Supporting grid flexibility
With a power output of 50 MW and an energy storage capacity of 100 MWh, the Beuvry energy storage facility is scheduled to enter operation in early 2027.
Directly connected to RTE’s electricity transmission network, it will play a key role in maintaining the balance of the French power system. Using its battery system, the facility will absorb electricity when it is abundant on the grid and feed it back within seconds when demand increases.
By participating in ancillary services and electricity markets, the facility will help increase grid flexibility, improve system resilience and support the growing integration of renewable energy.
An exemplary industrial redevelopment
The project demonstrates Corsica Sole’s commitment to giving a second life to previously developed land by transforming it into infrastructure that is essential to the energy transition.
Located on the same former industrial site as the Beuvry solar power plant, the energy storage facility continues this redevelopment while avoiding the use of additional land.
Both facilities share the same ambition of making productive use of existing industrial land while serving complementary purposes. The solar power plant generates renewable electricity, whereas the energy storage facility provides the flexibility required for the reliable operation of the electricity network. However, the two facilities operate entirely independently, each with its own grid connection and operating model.
An optimised design
With a land-use footprint of 51 m²/MWh, the Beuvry energy storage facility reflects Corsica Sole’s approach to the development of large-scale battery energy storage systems.
This design requires approximately three times less land than the national benchmark of 160 m²/MWh published in ADEME’s 2025 Observatory of Stationary Batteries, demonstrating that high-performance storage infrastructure can be developed while minimising land use.
A strategic project for the development of energy storage in France
The project has secured €30 million in bank financing from Bpifrance and Crédit Coopératif, as part of the strategic partnership between Corsica Sole and Banque des Territoires to accelerate the deployment of energy storage infrastructure across France.
Part of the facility’s revenues is secured through an aggregation agreement with Agregio Solutions, supporting the development of new storage capacity that is essential to the continued evolution of the French electricity system.
