Prato Energy storage facility (Corsica)

Energy storageIn operationCorsica

Located in Haute-Corse, the Prato energy storage facility is a strategic asset for the stability of the island’s electricity grid. Commissioned in 2021, it is based on five lithium-ion batteries with a total storage capacity of 10 MWh. This unique site in Corsica enables electricity to be stored when production exceeds demand and released when needed, thereby ensuring grid balance.

A facility essential to the stability of Corsica’s electricity grid

By providing both energy arbitrage and frequency regulation services, the Prato facility supports EDF SEI on a daily basis and helps prevent power outages. A true pillar of the island’s energy security, it also contributes to the transition towards a more sustainable model by facilitating the integration of intermittent renewable energy into the local energy mix.

Through this project, Corsica Sole strengthens its role as a pioneer in energy storage and reaffirms its commitment to Corsica’s energy autonomy.

A project serving the collective interest

The Prato site was developed following a referral by the French Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) in order to address the specific needs of island electricity networks. In a territory that is not connected to the continental grid and where consumption peaks are frequent — particularly during the summer period — having a high-performance storage system is essential.

Fully dedicated to EDF SEI, the facility provides daily technical support to the grid by balancing electricity production and consumption. By storing surplus electricity and releasing it during peak demand, Prato contributes to a more local, cleaner and more stable energy supply.

This project aligns with the objectives of the Collectivité de Corse to strengthen the island’s energy autonomy and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.

Corsica Sole’s expertise at work

The Prato facility was designed and developed by Corsica Sole, an independent solar power producer and a European leader in energy storage. The company currently operates more than 150 MWp of photovoltaic power plants and 360 MWh of storage capacity, and is developing a portfolio of over 3 GW of projects across mainland France, Corsica, overseas territories and Europe.

Through its expertise and long-term vision, Corsica Sole continues to innovate to build a sustainable energy future based on local, reliable and resilient solutions.

The objective is to provide a solution for territories not connected to the continental grid. Thanks to this call for tenders launched by the French Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), we were able to develop two twin facilities, in Corsica and in Réunion Island.
