Energy storage: Corsica Sole at the heart of the challenges facing the electricity grid on BFM Business

News

Electricity storage is now emerging as a key pillar of the energy transition. This is the central theme of the interview with Michael Coudyser, co-founder and CEO of Corsica Sole, on the programme Grand Angle on BFM Business, presented by Christophe Pallée.

Storage: the key to balancing the electricity system.

With the massive expansion of renewable energy, electricity generation is by its very nature variable: it depends on wind, sunshine and the seasons. Electricity consumption, however, remains constant and requires a continuous supply.

Storage provides the solution to this major challenge: matching generation to consumption.

Batteries therefore play a vital role by:

  • storing energy when it is produced in excess
  • releasing it when demand rises
  • helping to maintain the balance of the electricity grid

Stabilising the grid and preventing blackouts.

Beyond balancing supply and demand, storage also helps to stabilise the frequency of the electricity grid.

Batteries can react within milliseconds, absorbing or injecting energy to maintain this balance and prevent major incidents, such as blackouts.

A shift in scale across Europe.

Historically deployed in non-interconnected areas such as Corsica or overseas territories, energy storage is now experiencing rapid growth across mainland Europe.

With over 10 years’ experience, Corsica Sole has successfully anticipated these challenges and is now positioned as a key player in the sector, with increasingly ambitious projects in France and across Europe.

An essential lever to support new energy needs.

The rise of data centres and applications linked to artificial intelligence is driving a rapid increase in electricity demand. In this context, renewable energies – carbon-free, competitive and quick to deploy – combined with storage, appear to be an essential solution.

Towards an increasingly renewable energy system.

Tomorrow’s electricity system will be characterised by a growing share of renewable energy.

Storage will play a central role in ensuring its reliability, stability and performance.
